If you're here you've heard the news! Jessie Fultz Photography is now alive and kickin' and I am SO excited! I think these new changes are going to mean big things for my little business and I! This change has been a long time coming and I wanted to give you all a little insight into all the new stuff and why I chose to do it!
I have always been drawn to the documentary/photojournalistic style of photography. It's always been what came naturally to me, before I even really knew what I was doing, and I was just following my heart, that is the style of photos I would produce. Somewhere down the line, over the past 10 years, I started actually learning things about photography. Because I was so impressionable, I thought these things I was learning were the "right" way and I slowly and painfully struggled to train my brain how to shoot and edit the correct way. Perfectly posed, perfectly lit, and perfectly styled sessions was what I thought "good" photographers did and I wanted to be a good photographer. But throughout those years I always felt like something was missing. And when I would stop thinking and let my heart take over, I would produce photos that I thought were way more gorgeous than the ones I was spending hours on end trying to perfect. I wouldn't let myself give in to that though for fear of losing business. Again, I thought "This is not what people want. This is not what people are paying me for."
The true turning point for me was the very moment I snapped the picture above. I had always wanted to document a birth and I, of course, was ecstatic when my friend asked me to do these for her. But even though I had spent the last 17 hours at the hospital awaiting this little girl's arrival and capturing all of the details leading up to it, this moment, was when I realized that I was right where I was supposed to be. It took one birth and I knew this was my passion. It felt natural. I didn't even have to think about what I was doing like I normally do with the super posed, everyone stand still and say cheese type sessions.
Now don't misunderstand. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the types of sessions I mentioned above. They are beautiful, and if that's the style that appeals to you that is perfectly ok! There are many photographers out there that produce incredible work in that style. All I'm saying is, yes my clients have always loved my photos, but I didn't always love them, and I didn't enjoy doing those types of sessions nearly as much. It just wasn't me. I love to capture raw emotion. I want to create lasting memories for my clients of how they are on a regular basis. Each family has stories that are unique to them. Whether that be the birth of their first, second, or fifth child. Their morning routine and breakfast time together. Or their Christmas tree decorating traditions. Those are the things I love to capture.
So I did some soul-searching this past year, trying to decide what would be the best decision. Finally, a few months ago I decided I should just go for it! I knew if I was going to go through with a complete overhaul of my business I needed to wait until I got married so that I wouldn't have to change the business name when my name changed. So as you can imagine, I have been anxiously and somewhat impatiently awaiting this day for a while!
So here I am, Asheville's newest birth and documentary family photographer! Make sure you take a look around my site! Watch the videos, and get a good feel for what it is I'll be doing! I am so passionate about this and I know my clients will love the stories I'm able to artistically create for them from pieces of their every day life! You will see that I do still offer traditional portrait sessions as well, but I urge you to at least try out the storytelling sessions! The possibilities are endless!
I guess that's all for now, but I have some really exciting things coming up in the next few weeks so keep your eyes open!!
Till next time,
<3 Jessie
